Herzog’s notebook

I watched a documentary over the weekend that German filmmaker Werner Herzog made about his relationship with the actor Klaus Kinski. To call the relationship tempestuous would be an understatement, and it’s a remarkable thing to watch. (For a brief glimpse, check out the trailer on YouTube.)

Also remarkable was a scene with actress Claudia Cardinale, who recalled, among other things, the notebook Herzog carried with him while they filming Fitzcarraldo. Kinski was suspicious of it, because, as Cardinale pointed out, it didn’t concern him, and he never knew what Herzog was writing. Of course, neither did anybody else, because — talk about tiny writing! Just get a load of the screenshot above and try to decipher the text.

Meryl and the Minister, part III

We have a sighting! Neither Karen nor I has made it to the theaters to see It’s Complicated, the romantic comedy starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin. But several friends and readers have, and they’ve been able to confirm that one of our planners does indeed make an appearance. Writes a friend:

“The funny thing about Meryl Streep’s character (in the movie) is that she forgets appointments and meetings. Steve Martin’s character gives her the gift of the leather bound Quo Vadis planner to help her remember her appointments with him. When she opens the gift, the back of the planner is face up. The imprinted Quo Vadis label is displayed before she turns the planner over.”

Note that we did *not* pay for product placement, which is part of the reason we’re so excited about this! Director Nancy Meyers is apparently just a fan of Quo Vadis — as is Meryl Streep.

Julie, Julia, and Clairefontaine

Another one of Clairefontaine’s famous fans: Julia Child, who used the notebooks for recipes and notes when she was living in Paris and studying at Le Cordon Bleu.

So we were honored when the producers of Julie & Julia, a new movie about her life (and the attempt, decades later, of blogger Julie Powell to make each of the 524 recipes in Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking), got in touch with us. There’s been a lot of talk online about the film — guess that’s what happens when you make a movie about a blogger. At any rate, the film’s prop master was interested in finding period-appropriate notebooks for star Meryl Streep to use, so our archivists dug some up and sent them over.

Unfortunately, we don’t know which ones they actually used, but you can spot one briefly at minute 1:10 of the preview. Still, any excuse to see Meryl Streep, right? Who, incidentally, is herself a fan of Exaclair. She used G. Lalo Verge pads as props in The Devil Wears Prada, and will be using a Quo Vadis Minister (Habana cover) and Rhodia pads in an upcoming, as-yet-untitled romantic comedy.

Meryl and the Minister

Speaking of movies and stars… Karen got a special request recently that got our own tongues wagging. Turns out, Meryl Streep loves the Minister! So does the director of her next movie—an as-yet-untitled romantic comedy co-starring Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin—Nancy Meyers.

Apparently, Nancy wants to use a Minister (in one of the new Habana covers) as a prop in a movie. The planners are sold out in stores, but we were able to dig up a couple from the factory and send them over.

Look for them in the movie!
