Friday review roundup

Happy Friday, everyone! What better way to kick off a winter weekend than with some constructive criticism of Habana notebooks:

  • Azizah at Gourmet Pens compares the new, ivory-paged Habana to its old white-paper counterpart. The verdict: more showthrough on the new Habana with fountain pens, and “even though the ivory paper is satiny smooth, the white paper is so smooth that it’s practically glossy. It gives start contrast to any color of ink and makes them look outstanding. I miss that.”
  • Jake Seliger tackles the small Habana’s big problem at The Story’s Story: “it’s not quite a pocket notebook. It’s also not quite a full-sized notebook, either, at 4″ x 6″, it’s uncomfortably in between, too large to carry around and too small for classrooms.”

I know Azizah’s not alone in her preference for the old, white paper. Do you agree with Jake that the small Habanas are awkwardly sized?

Ivory Habanas: Reviewers speak

Posted July 27, 2011 by
in Pens, Paper & People, Product Reviews | 2 comments »

I’ve been collecting people’s thoughts on the new ivory-paged Habanas in our weekly review roundups, but here’s a more comprehensive look at the reactions we’ve seen across the web…

First of all, several people (myself included) have noted that the color is more “cream” than “ivory.” Unfortunately, it’s not a description that’s easy for us to change in our product packaging and marketing materials, but… duly noted. Whatever it’s called, I can’t say we’ve changed the minds of any passionate white paper lovers. I can say we’re very grateful that people have given the new shade a chance, and we hope it will still have a place in their notebook collections.

Of course, some folks prefer ivory to white. In an ideal world, we’d find a way to satisfy everyone, but given the economics, I can’t promise anything.

One thing our reviewers were relieved to discover is that the switch to 85g paper did not render the Habana fountain pen unfriendly. “I didn’t notice any significance in the performance of the two papers,” said Brian Goulet in a video review. Some reviewers noted a slight increase in showthrough (which Goulet rather poetically calls “ghosting”). In the words of our friend Beth, this is “Not enough to keep you from writing on the back of the page. But enough to cause a little eyestrain if you will be transcribing what you write to your computer at a later date.”

As for the narrower ruling on the new large Habanas, that seems to be a matter of personal preference. Though as Note Booker, Esq. figures: “By narrowing the ruling and leaving less blank space above and below the ruling at the top and bottom of the page, each page now has 40 lines for writing instead of the 26 on the previous version. That’s more than 50% more lines on the same size page, or the equivalent of adding 40 sheets to the notebook!”

In no particular oder, here’s a list of the Habana reviews that we’re aware of thus far:

If you’ve written or read a review that we haven’t posted here, please let us know! And thanks again for all your feedback.

The new ivory Habanas

I know this news isn’t going to be welcomed by everyone, but I’m nonetheless pleased to announce that our new ivory Habanas are finished and ready to ship. They’re available in both large and small formats, and lined and unlined 85g fountain pen friendly paper.

About the images above… ivory is a hard color to capture, and we haven’t had a lot of time to take proper product photos. To my eye, the paper is not quite as dark or as yellow as it looks here. Nonetheless, YMMV, and though my photographic skills are limited, I’ll post some shots that I took in my backyard tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime, if you want to place an order, ask your favorite retailer, or try your luck later this week with our preview giveaway.

I didn’t realize it earlier, but our new Habana artist series encompasses more than Keith Haring — we’re also importing two Matisse designs, along with Picasso’s Portrait of Dora Maar (above).

Here’s a preview of the Matisse:

Habana news

Habana news, hot off the presses!

In 2011, we’ll be switching our Habana notebooks over to the same paper as Quo Vadis France. The ones we sell in North America will still be made in the US, but they’ll now contain ivory colored paper that’s 85g in both small and large (and lined and unlined) versions.

The decision was made in the interests of international standardization.

I know people have strong preferences when it comes to white vs. ivory, and all Clairefontaine brand notebooks will continue to be filled with bright white paper — as will the Rhodia pads, though the Webbies have ivory paper. If you’re looking for a notebook that’s got white paper AND a Habana type cover, keep in mind that you can get much the same effect with a Clairefontaine basics notebook and a leatherette planner cover. I’ll be experimenting with other planner cover/Clairefontaine combos in the weeks to come.

In the meantime, we don’t yet have any samples of the new Habana, but I’ll be sure to post more information and updates as soon as we do…

UPDATE: If haven’t already seen it, please check out Karen’s comment about the switch, and our future plans.

User review: Lauren on the Habana

Posted April 14, 2010 by

Lauren from Prescott, Arizona took one of our large Habanas for a test drive recently; here’s what she had to say…

I’ve developed a true respect and affection for this notebook. I use it to record my textiles activity: ongoing projects, lists, dreams, materials, reference charts, etc. It’s a perfect size to throw into any type of project bag (or handbag). The construction feels ballistic solid: I imagine it will last the years it will take me to fill the journal, and that it will look as new when that time comes as it did when it arrived last November. The elastic piece that keeps the journal closed is perfect.

I use the blank pages in the front to write up reference charts, the pocket in the back for miscellaneous patterns. The Clairefontaine paper is delightful. I write mostly with a mechanical pencil or fountain pen on the paper, and both look great and hold up like new. The paper is beautiful, smooth, and accommodating. The bookmark perfect for setting the place where I’m working. (Does make me dream of a notebook with a few, different colored bookmarks! :)

Thank you so much for this wonderful notebook! It’s truly a delight. Inspirational. Practical. I’m fantasizing about one for each category of my life! (And a larger one for each of the smaller ones. :)
