Lots of meat in today’s reviews! Let’s dive right in.

  • Sandra shares a lovely ink-and-pencil piece she made on a large Habana. “I do like this size immensely — it’s large enough that you have plenty of room to expand and explore, but small enough to fit on my scanner. It’s light for its size and I wouldn’t hesitate to carry it around.”
  • Heather of A Penchant for Paper isn’t sure that the large Habana is the best size for her, but enjoyed the experiment: “It did feel freeing to have so much space to draw in, but I think it will take some time for me to become used to working in such a large notebook.”
  • Aisazia reviews the Space 24 she won in one of last year’s giveaways. “I’ve grown fairly fond of this planner. It’s super convenient to carry around and perfect for a bag. The paper is fountain pen friendly which means generally all ink friendly as long as it dries. It has all the bells and whistles of a typical planner and a little extra.”

A notebook, a planner — this Friday’s reviews are crisp, clean, and simple.

  • Over at Plannerisms, Laurie has selected the planner she’ll use for 2013… and it’s the not-dead-yet ABP/1! Awkward name, smart planner. “And it just keeps getting better.” Indeed.
  • Finepoints posts first impressions of a Habana bought after “frustration and bitterness brought on by cheap-ass paper.” The (snap) verdict? “With the solid construction and quality paper it’s a good notebook. A VERY good notebook…”

Courtesy of Brian Goulet, we’ve got our first official review of the new A4 Habana! “What more can I say? It’s a Habana and it’s big.” To get his thoughts, watch the video above or check out the overview/summary on his blog.

(If you like what you see, don’t forget to enter our A4 Habana giveaway!)

Also worth sharing is this review of the new refillable J. Herbin rollerball at the Writer’s Bloc Blog. “With its transparent body and simple design, the J. Herbin refillable rollerball … is a welcome addition to Exaclair’s new products for 2012.”

Can I get a ruling?

I’ve been meaning to follow up on Beth’s recent comment about the lining on the new, small Habanas:

While I can fit my bigger nibs between the lines with practice, I find they really slow me down as I have to take care or I wander outside those lines… I like “college ruled” but this feels cramped.

Of course, everyone has different preferences when it comes to ruling size, but I wonder if others find the Habana’s narrowest ruling too cramped. What do you think?

Friday review roundup

Happy Friday, everyone! What better way to kick off a winter weekend than with some constructive criticism of Habana notebooks:

  • Azizah at Gourmet Pens compares the new, ivory-paged Habana to its old white-paper counterpart. The verdict: more showthrough on the new Habana with fountain pens, and “even though the ivory paper is satiny smooth, the white paper is so smooth that it’s practically glossy. It gives start contrast to any color of ink and makes them look outstanding. I miss that.”
  • Jake Seliger tackles the small Habana’s big problem at The Story’s Story: “it’s not quite a pocket notebook. It’s also not quite a full-sized notebook, either, at 4″ x 6″, it’s uncomfortably in between, too large to carry around and too small for classrooms.”

I know Azizah’s not alone in her preference for the old, white paper. Do you agree with Jake that the small Habanas are awkwardly sized?

Ivory Habanas: Reviewers speak

Posted July 27, 2011 by
in Pens, Paper & People, Product Reviews | 2 comments »

I’ve been collecting people’s thoughts on the new ivory-paged Habanas in our weekly review roundups, but here’s a more comprehensive look at the reactions we’ve seen across the web…

First of all, several people (myself included) have noted that the color is more “cream” than “ivory.” Unfortunately, it’s not a description that’s easy for us to change in our product packaging and marketing materials, but… duly noted. Whatever it’s called, I can’t say we’ve changed the minds of any passionate white paper lovers. I can say we’re very grateful that people have given the new shade a chance, and we hope it will still have a place in their notebook collections.

Of course, some folks prefer ivory to white. In an ideal world, we’d find a way to satisfy everyone, but given the economics, I can’t promise anything.

One thing our reviewers were relieved to discover is that the switch to 85g paper did not render the Habana fountain pen unfriendly. “I didn’t notice any significance in the performance of the two papers,” said Brian Goulet in a video review. Some reviewers noted a slight increase in showthrough (which Goulet rather poetically calls “ghosting”). In the words of our friend Beth, this is “Not enough to keep you from writing on the back of the page. But enough to cause a little eyestrain if you will be transcribing what you write to your computer at a later date.”

As for the narrower ruling on the new large Habanas, that seems to be a matter of personal preference. Though as Note Booker, Esq. figures: “By narrowing the ruling and leaving less blank space above and below the ruling at the top and bottom of the page, each page now has 40 lines for writing instead of the 26 on the previous version. That’s more than 50% more lines on the same size page, or the equivalent of adding 40 sheets to the notebook!”

In no particular oder, here’s a list of the Habana reviews that we’re aware of thus far:

If you’ve written or read a review that we haven’t posted here, please let us know! And thanks again for all your feedback.

The new ivory Habanas

Posted April 13, 2011 by

I know this news isn’t going to be welcomed by everyone, but I’m nonetheless pleased to announce that our new ivory Habanas are finished and ready to ship. They’re available in both large and small formats, and lined and unlined 85g fountain pen friendly paper.

About the images above… ivory is a hard color to capture, and we haven’t had a lot of time to take proper product photos. To my eye, the paper is not quite as dark or as yellow as it looks here. Nonetheless, YMMV, and though my photographic skills are limited, I’ll post some shots that I took in my backyard tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime, if you want to place an order, ask your favorite retailer, or try your luck later this week with our preview giveaway.
