Here’s something fun I’ve been meaning to post for a while, after seeing it on BoingBoing in December… a stop-motion film by Adam Rosenberg made with 265 pieces of laser cut paper. Enjoy!

Have you guys seen this super clever Dutch notebook video? If not: watch it now, you won’t be disappointed. After that, you can check out some of the other notebook videos that Evelien’s made.
Awesome, eh?
Habanas in Italy

Stephen Lloyd Webber, a New Mexico based poet, teacher, and our current Writers’ Project interviewee, has run writing and wellness retreats in Italy for the past few years. (“A peaceful, richly enlivening environment where people can truly dedicate themselves to their health and their writing.”)
Last summer, Karen donated a stack of Habanas for Stephen to give his participants. In this video, Stephen describes their reactions… Me, I just like watching the waves roll up against the shore.

Alberto Lung’s phenomenal Manga-like artwork has popped up before on this blog and on Rhodia Drive. Here, then, is one of a small-but-growing library of his YouTube videos, where he plays with different materials and demonstrates his techniques.
In the video embedded above, Alberto does a few sketches with a glass pen, an Exacompta pad, and J. Herbin’s anniversary ink. Awesome to watch them evolve, no?
Ask a pen maker

Got a burning question about fountain pens, ink, or paper? This afternoon at 2:22 pm EST, Brian Goulet will be logging on to Ustream and doing a live video chat with anyone who’s interested. Last week, about 30 people joined him to discuss Brian’s writing box prototypes, ink flow with cartridges/converters, and his own personal background. He also did a couple of paper tests and comparisons, and discovered that Exaclair packing paper is fountain pen friendly (who knew?!).
This afternoon, Brian will cover some watercolors he’s been doing in the Clairefontaine Graf it sketchbooks, the J. Herbin Creapen, his personal custom pens, and whatever else people are curious about. To listen in or participate, just follow this link.
On another note, unless you’re reading this post on an RSS feed, you’ll notice that things look a little different around here this week as we launch our new design! I’ll call out some of the new features and functionalities in a separate post. In the meantime, if you have any trouble with anything on the site, please let us know.
Helping hoarders II: Geralin in action
Posted March 25, 2010 by Leah Hoffmannin Videos | 3 comments »
UPDATE: These clips are no longer available on YouTube, though you can still see them on Geralin’s website.
Last week, we interviewed professional organizer Geralin Thomas about her work on A&E’s Hoarders. This week, you can see her in action: Geralin just put up a bunch of clips on her YouTube page that show how she helps hoarders make decisions about the items in their homes. Of the clip above, she writes:
Missy told me she will “never” get to the post office to return a few things she purchased on line that weren’t wanted/needed. She wanted to have the merchandise credited to her account but “couldn’t” get to the post office. She, like many hoarders, use a lot of “all or nothing” language.
Hoarders often think of the worst case scenarios. For example, some “know” how things will turn out. Some think in extremes. Missy’s statement, “I’m never going to get to the post office” was one of many.
She would most likely benefit from accomplishing very small goals, like returning an item or two for a refund. I don’t think she was hanging onto the return items because it was too difficult to let them go. There were many items she was happy to donate/discard. She believed it was too hard to get to the post office.
More torture! Habana v. Webbie v. Moleskine

Let me preface this by saying that nearly everyone keeps a variety of different notebooks, made by different brands, in regular rotation. We know that. We endorse that. And we all have different needs/preferences in terms of writing instruments; fountain pen users love our heaviest, 90g paper, while others need nothing more than a few pages of lightweight 64g to receive their gel pens and rollerballs and pencils.
But Karen and I were nonetheless intrigued to see pen maker Brian Goulet’s recent vlogs over at Ink Nouveau. As you may remember, Brian likes to subject the notebooks and stationery that his company sells to various acts of ink-related torture. A couple weeks ago, he put a Habana, a Webbie, and a Moleskine to a head-to-head bleedthrough test with a couple drops of J. Herbin. That video’s embedded above, so you can see the results for yourself.
Brian’s since done more detailed comparisons of Moleskine vs. Habana and the Moleskine vs. Webbie to discuss size, thickness, price, and all the other factors that help determine which notebooks best fit your needs. In a world where you can’t always try before you buy, they’re great tools to aid your decisions.

Halloween spider!

Happy Halloween, everyone! Here’s a video I shot earlier this year of a spider spinning a massive web in our backyard… look at that star on her belly!
Candid Clamera

I just got back from a lovely vacation in Westport, MA, where the weather was great and the outdoor activities plentiful and diverse. I’ll blog more about it in the upcoming weeks — I went lobstering, musseling, and digging for steamer clams, among other things — but for now, here’s a video I shot of a baby razor clam digging its way back into the sand.
Check out that frilly little tongue!
Some brave (and hungry) geese

As many of you know, I often go hiking on summer weekends near the NJ/NY border—lovely perk of having a car… A couple weeks ago, before heading out to Ramapo State Forest, we stopped by the Great Falls in Paterson, NJ. They didn’t disappoint: big cliffs, gushing water, and a footbridge that stretched out across them where you could take it all in.
What may have impressed me the most, however, were the Canada Geese that were standing quite literally at the top of the falls and pecking at the fish that went by. I don’t know how they managed not to get caught by the water’s momentum, but I’ve got the evidence on camera. Unfortunately, in my eagerness to capture the closeup I didn’t pull back to convey how tall the cliffs are and how fast the water’s moving, but there’s a still picture after the jump that should give you an idea. (Or you can check out one of these other videos of Paterson Falls.)
