Just in time for summer, we’ve posted a new Writers’ Project interview with playwright J.D. Eames, who talks about her writing routines, her online mockumentary, and her favorite pens and inks.

While you’re there, be sure to read through our older interviews for more information, inspiration, and advice!

Friends, fans, countrymen

You’re on Facebook. We’re on Facebook. We should be friends — or fans — but beyond that, we want to know what you like to do on Facebook, and what you’d like us to do. Right now, we link to blog content and occasionally post random updates. (We do that on Twitter, too.) But there’s undoubtedly more to be done, and for a social media wallflower like me, who only got a personal FB account last fall and still doesn’t use it very much, it’s hard to determine what’s best. Do you want more random updates? Polls? Quizzes? Photos? Games?

Legally, I don’t think we’re allowed to run Facebook-only contests, but if you have any other suggestions, please write to us here or in the comments.

Ink bloopers

I tossed the packaging on my bottle of Rouge Hematite soon after it arrived in the mail, but took a picture of a sample at the National Stationery Show to confirm what an eagle-eyed reader recently pointed out: “rince” should be “rinse,” of course, in the last line of the paragraph in gold.

Unlike our paper products, which are made in the U.S., our inks are imported from France, which causes some occasional “Lost in Translation” moments.

According to our product manager, Cecilia, we caught the mistake earlier this year and passed it on to J. Herbin’s French headquarters. Unfortunately, they’d just launched a reprint of the boxes and could only correct it for the next batch.

Cognates!

It’s been a while since I’ve experimented with decoupage, but here’s a project that’s got me inspired: Kamala’s colorful DIY planner cover.

Made from a Circa notebook and our own Decopatch paper, it’s colorful and unique.

NSS Retrospective

The National Stationery Show snuck up on me this year, and I didn’t make it out till Wednesday, the last day. Above is a picture I took of the Exaclair booth with my crappy point-and-shoot, and here’s a shot of some Quo Vadis products:

I’ll blog about specific items in the upcoming weeks, but for now let me share a lesson I learned this year: the last day of a trade show is a great time to attend. Exaclair doesn’t do this for logistical reasons, but plenty of other exhibitors offer great deals on all sorts of samples, since that’s preferable to boxing them up and shipping them back where they came from. I got two space pens for $20, along with some magnetic sticker thingies that I’ll give to my niece and nephew. I almost bought this super cool “perpetual calendar” from MoMA, but decided, reluctantly, that I didn’t really need it.

I came across this excellent DIY version of our own elastic bookmark a while back, and have been meaning to share it ever since — awesome, no?

Check out Rhomany’s Realm for instructions on making your own, and while you’re there, be sure to explore some of the journals and artwork she’s posted.

Graduating planners

The end of the school year is close, and I’m wondering: are those of you who’ll graduate planning to stick with an academic-year planner? Or will you switch to a January-to-January planner, like most of the working world uses?

After college, I stuck with academic planners for several years since that was the only way I knew how to measure the year. It was helpful when I went back to grad school, but once I started working again, I went January-to-January and it feels very comfortable now.

What are you, er, planning to do?

Friday review roundup

Eventually, we hope to see more people weigh in about the new ivory Habanas, but here are a few first impressions…

A first look: The indefatigable Brian Goulet publishes detailed text and video reviews of the ivory Habanas over at Ink Nouveau.

Beyond Moleskine: Kent Shaffer includes the Habana — along with Clairefontaine and Rhodia — in a post about non-Moleskine notebooks, sketchbooks, and journals at Church Relevance.

Hardware and pens: This isn’t really a review, but I was so impressed by StyloBug33′s new wooden pen-storage chest (which she pictures with a Habana and a Moleskine to better demonstrate scale) that I thought I would feature it here.

Happy Friday!
