Playoff planning

playoffs

I’m not usually the kind of person who plans her life according to what’s on TV. Around this time of year, however, that all changes, and my schedule revolves around one thing: the NHL playoffs.

I didn’t grow up playing or watching hockey, but I’ve gotten into both over the past few years. And if the New Jersey Devils are playing, then chances are I’ll watch. I saw all seven games of Round 1 against the Carolina Hurricanes—including the last, tragic one, during which Carolina scored two surprise goals in the last two minutes of the game to beat the Devils 4-3 and eliminate them from the series. Fortunately, none of the games conflicted with any actual social obligations, and in fact it became a kind of anchor in my life, motivating me to get my work done during the day in time to join my boyfriend in the living room.

Now that the Devils have been eliminated, the playoffs are less an organizing force than an opportunistic indulgence, but I’m still keeping my eye on Round 2… especially the high-charged Penguins/Capitals series. Last game’s tomorrow night!

Leonardo da Vinci’s Notebooks

In the era of instant access, libraries, museums and universities are racing to scan rare manuscripts and artifacts in their collections and make them available online. Examples can be found on The British Library, The Library of Congress and The World Digital Library.

The British Library began a massive digitalization project in 2005 with Microsoft, and plans to scan 25 million book pages, including some of Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks.

A collection of loose papers and notes, these 28 pages outline da Vinci’s fascination with mechanics, bird flight and studies on reflections and curved mirrors. The Italian script is written in da Vinci’s typical left-to-right “mirror” writing.

Where to go: Lady Bird Lake

May’s first “Where to Go” entry comes from Texas resident Bill Bradford, who writes about his favorite spot in Austin.

My favorite place to go – when I lived in Austin, and when I travel back there…

I like to go to the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue on Lake Austin/Lady Bird Lake. He was one of my favorite musicians, and it’s a great place to sit, contemplate, think, write, and sketch.

I took pictures before I moved to Houston.

Today’s date – 5/7/09, is one of only six days this century that will feature three consecutive odd digits.

Ron Gordon, a Redwood City, CA teacher wants people to recognize and celebrate Odd Day in a big way.

He’s offering $579 – 5-7-9 again – to those people with the biggest and most enthusiastic Odd celebrations.

The afterlife of planners

Tom Hall had a great question recently about what happens to our old planners—extra 2008 editions, or even the 2009 planners that are left over once the start-of-the-year rush wanes (actually, many of those are now on sale at the Daily Planner).

We often get requests around income tax time for older datebooks; if we have any, we’re happy to oblige. If asked, we’ll also gladly give them to nonprofits like Surf Diva.

Sometimes people spill coffee on their planner, or lose it, and we send them a refill gratis.

The rest, alas, are destroyed; we know that some people like to reuse old planners as notebooks, but we usually have very few left, and we don’t typically sell things directly to individual customers.

A number of customers have asked us to offer Quo Vadis’ ABP1 in more Club covers.  For 2010, the ABP1 will be available in ALL Club colors – black, blue, cherry red, teal, saddle brown, spring green, pink and lilac.  Pink and lilac are new for 2010.  See all Club colors here.

The ABP1 is the same size as our Exacompta Prestige Journal 21.  Both date books are 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 or 13 x 21 cm.  Journal 21 and ABP1 are daily planners.

So, if you feel like a change but still want to keep a daily diary, you can switch from one to the other and still keep your favorite cover.

The ABP1′s day-per-page is divided into an appointments column and notes.  It is printed on white paper.

The Journal 21 has room to write for each hour/half hour, and is printed on lightly tinted paper.

See Journal 21 here.  ABP1 here.

Anyone prefer one over the other?

Guest post: Why use a fountain pen?

IT lawyer Tom Hall has been a devoted fountain pen user for nearly 30 years. Here, he talks about how he got interested in them, and describes his favorite pens…

“Why use a fountain pen?”

It seems a reasonable question. Ballpoint pens are readily available, fairly reliable and inexpensive. Losing or breaking one is no cause for concern. But for the most part they are also dull to look at and many are difficult to use. A good fountain pen floats across the page. Many ballpoints need to be forced to their task. The necessary death grip does nothing for my carpal tunnel.
